The Brutal Battle for Dong Ap Bia, May 11-20, 1969 at the Northern end of the A Shau Valley near the Ho Chi Minh trail. 187th Infantry, 501st Infantry & 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. By Samuel Zaffiri. As part of Operation Apache Snow in the northern end of the A Shau Valley, the 101st Airborne and the US Marines began an assault on Hill 937 and 10 days into hell. The ferocity of the battle set off a fire storm of protest in the USA and the battle quickly became known around the world as a bloody human meatgrinder called Hamburger Hill as Screaming Eagles struggled up the mountain through a wall of hot lead.
