ANGELS IN RED HATS: U.S. Airborne Advisors of MACV Team 162 and the Elite South Vietnamese Airborne. The Vietnamese Airborne's American 'Red Hat' advisors (Army Airborne, USAF Forward Air Controllers + a few Marines) were an elite group of warriors individually selected for MACV Team 162. Serving as the Strategic Reserve and commanded by some South Vietnam's finest officers, the Red Hats were committed to fight wherever the action was heaviest. The first-person accounts of battles and are some of the most hair-raising you will ever read.
Includes a listing of all combat jumps, the MACV Advisor Team 162 KIAs, the Vietnamese Airborne Commanders, the campaigns in which the Red Hats participated including Laos and Cambodia, awards, unit citations, combat stories, training of the Vietnamese Red Hats, the combat history of the Vietnamese Airborne Forces, and so much more! The photographs are superb and most were never published elsewhere. You will even see a rare photograph of The Bear, then Major Norman Schwarzkopf, carring a wounded Red Hat. It is a little known fact that General Schwarzkopf was an advisor to the elite ARVN Paratroopers.
In addition to General Schwarzkopf, many other legends and heroes of the Vietnam War served with the Red Hats including
--Herb Lloyd, who went from Sergeant to General in his career.
--French Airborne Major Marcel Bigeard
--Captain Thomas Throckmorton, son of the U.S. Deputy Commander of U.S. Forces in Vietnam.
--Lt. Sava Stepanovitch, who was decorated for valor in three armies: Royal Yugoslavian Army against the Nazis in WWII; the French Army for service against the Viet Minh and the insurgents in Algeria, and the U.S. Army against the V.C. and NVA.
--Mike Sinkovitz, who was fearless and wounded more than 12 times.
--MSGT James Ferguson who fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam
--Lt. Barry McCaffrey who retired as a 4-star general.
--Brothers and Majors Ralph and Philip Pryor
--Gutsy Christian Frenchy Girard
--Command Sergeant Major Mad Mike Martin
--and many other U.S. and Vietnamese heroes written about in this outstanding book.
